"Josh", is in Cook County’s juvenile detention center facing a life sentence for double homicide. We met him seven months ago when his pod* was invited for prayer and bible study. That first afternoon, he came and listened very intently.
When returned the next week. Josh came with a notebook in his hand and shared what he had written down after the last week’s study. What was in his notebook was verse after verse about God’s love and salvation. Here are a few that he had written:
On the last day of the feast, the great day, Jesus stood up and cried out, “If anyone thirsts, let him come to me and drink. Whoever believes in me, as the Scripture has said, ‘Out of his heart will flow rivers of living water.’” - John 7:37-39
So Jesus said to the Jews who had believed him, “If you abide in my word, you are truly my disciples, and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free. - John 8:31-32
put on your strength, O Zion;
put on your beautiful garments,
O Jerusalem, the holy city;
for there shall no more come into you
the uncircumcised and the unclean.
Shake yourself from the dust and arise;
be seated, O Jerusalem;
loose the bonds from your neck,
O captive daughter of Zion. - Isaiah 52:1-2
It was clear that Josh understood that Isaiah was referencing Jesus and when asked if he had a relationship with Jesus, he turned with a big smile and answered “Yes!”
Josh’s goal over the past seven months has been to learn as much as possible from our team of mentors that poured into him each week so that he will be the “preacher man” where he gets sent to an adult facility. Sadly, that happened on November 24, 2014 when he was transferred to Cook County Jail where he will be held indefinitely.
Please pray for our young brother in Christ as he desires to be a light in his new place of residence.
Each week at the Cook County Juvenile Detention centers, young men who have been incarcerated have the opportunity to engage in a mentoring program with YFC staff and volunteers who lead them through key passages of the scriptures. Learn more about this unique ministry here.
* A pod refers to a cell block of 16 inmates.
